Portable vs Built-In RV Water Filters
Portable inline filters are cheap and easy to replace. Built-in canister systems provide more capacity and better customization. Neither category automatically turns an unsafe source into potable water.
Separate pressure control from filtration
A water filter removes specified contaminants. A pressure regulator limits inlet pressure. They solve different problems and often belong in the same hookup.
Inline portable filters
These attach to the hose and are simple for weekend campers. They are inexpensive, compact, and easy to replace. The tradeoffs are limited media volume, modest flow, and broad rather than highly tailored treatment.
Canister systems
A canister can use sediment, carbon, or specialty cartridges. Multi-stage systems let you separate sediment removal from taste/odor treatment and increase media capacity. They take more space and require winterization and cartridge management.
Built-in versus external canisters

Cartridge life depends on gallons, source-water quality, time, and storage. Replace according to the manufacturer rather than waiting for a dramatic taste problem.
Sanitation

What to verify on your exact RV before buying
RV gear is unusually dependent on the rig. Record your shore-power service, tire size and required pressure, cargo capacity, city-water connection, sewer outlet location, installed camera prep, generator transfer arrangement, storage-bay dimensions, and the model numbers of major appliances. A product can be excellent and still be wrong for your RV.

Weekend campground owner: prioritize quick setup, compact storage, and gear that can sit unused for weeks without becoming a maintenance project. You may not need the highest-capacity or commercial-duty version.
Full-time or seasonal RVer: durability, replacement parts, diagnostics, and service access matter much more because the equipment is cycled repeatedly. Paying for a better gauge, easier cartridge sourcing, stronger duty cycle, or hardwired installation can make sense.
