30-Amp vs 50-Amp RV Service: What Your Rig Can Actually Run

Every RV owner runs into this eventually: it's a hot afternoon, the AC is on, someone starts the microwave, and everything goes dark. Understanding the power math prevents most of these moments and makes the difference between comfortable camping and constant breaker-flipping.

The Math

Watts equals volts times amps. That's the whole calculation you need.

Everything else follows from there. Every appliance you run pulls some number of watts (or amps at 120V — same idea) from the pedestal, and once the total exceeds the service rating, the breaker trips.

The 30-Amp Reality

3,600 watts total. Any two of the high-draw appliances above running simultaneously trips the pedestal. The workarounds:

Most 30-amp rigs learn to alternate. Some run a small inverter/battery bank to carry the AC while the microwave runs on shore power — a workaround, not an upgrade.

The 50-Amp Reality

12,000 watts, split into two independent 120V legs. Modern 50-amp rigs typically wire high-draw appliances across the two legs so nothing shares a leg with another high-draw device. Air conditioners #1 and #2 on separate legs; microwave and water heater on separate legs; kitchen outlets and bedroom outlets often split across legs too.

Result: a family of four can run two ACs, a microwave, a hair dryer, and a fridge simultaneously without tripping breakers. This is why 50-amp rigs feel like houses and 30-amp rigs feel like camping.

Down to 3,600 watts total for a rig designed for 12,000. Run one big appliance at a time. Absolutely no running both ACs — you'll trip the pedestal instantly on startup.

Either on 15/20A household

1,800 or 2,400 watts. Enough for fridge and lights only. AC and microwave will overload the pedestal or extension cord immediately.

Bottom Line

Know your service. Know the biggest three or four appliances in your rig and the sum of their running wattages. If the sum exceeds your pedestal capacity, plan to alternate. If you need everything running at once regularly, next rig should be 50-amp.

The Weak Pedestal Problem

Older campground pedestals with worn breakers may trip at 22–25 amps despite being labeled 30A. If you're tripping breakers at loads that shouldn't cause problems, the pedestal breaker is likely the issue rather than your usage. Try a different site if one is available, or accept lower usable capacity at that pedestal until it's repaired.

A Note on Voltage vs Amperage Confusion

Owners occasionally think 50-amp service means 50 volts instead of 240V split into two 120V legs. It doesn't — both 30-amp and 50-amp deliver 120V to standard outlets inside the rig. The difference is total available current, not voltage per outlet.

The dryer, hardwired AC #2, and any 240V appliances in a 50-amp rig use both legs simultaneously. Your microwave, outlets, and lights use one leg at 120V just like the 30-amp world. Understanding this makes the load management math intuitive.

Is 50-amp really twice as much power as 30-amp?

More than that. 30-amp gives you one 120V leg at 30 amps = 3,600 watts. 50-amp gives you two 120V legs at 50 amps each = 12,000 watts. That's over three times the power available, not two times.

Can I upgrade my 30-amp rig to 50-amp?

Not really. The inlet, transfer switch, main breaker panel, and often the wiring are all sized for 30-amp on a 30-amp rig. Retrofit is expensive and rarely worth it. If you need 50-amp capability regularly, next rig.

What happens if I exceed the pedestal amperage?

The pedestal breaker trips. Everything on shore power inside the rig goes off. If it happens repeatedly, either reduce your simultaneous loads or move to a bigger service. Old pedestals sometimes have weak breakers that trip at less than their rated amperage — a common source of 'why is nothing working' frustration.
