Remove the shroud

Four to six screws hold the exterior shroud in place. Remove them, lift the shroud off, set aside. Take note of any gasket damage or missing hardware.

Vacuum the interior

Debris accumulates inside the shroud — leaves, seed pods, mud dauber nests, dust. Shop vac everything out before touching coils. Wear a mask; a season of accumulated dust plus condenser mildew is not pleasant.

Clean the condenser coil (outer)

The outer coil (facing outward when installed) is the condenser. Blow compressed air through it from the inside outward — this pushes debris out the way it came in. If coils are visibly dirty after air, apply coil cleaner spray (any HVAC supply), let dwell 10 minutes, rinse gently with garden hose from inside outward.

Clean the evaporator coil (inner)

The inner coil (facing down into the rig) is the evaporator. Access through the interior ceiling grille — remove filter and grille, gently clean visible coil surface with soft brush or vacuum. Do not use water on the interior coil.

Straighten fins

Bent fins block airflow. A cheap fin comb straightens them. Focus on obvious impact damage (branch strike, hail); minor unevenness doesn't affect performance meaningfully.

Inspect the roof gasket

The rubber gasket between the AC base and the roof seals against water intrusion. Look for compression, cracks, or gaps. A deteriorated gasket lets rain into the ceiling structure and warm outside air past the cool intake. Replace annually if damaged; every 5–7 years otherwise.

Check the evaporator drain

Condensate drips off the evaporator and drains through a small pan under the unit, out through a hose in the shroud. Blocked drains cause water dripping inside the rig. Poke a wire through the drain to clear any blockage.

Replace the interior air filter

The washable filter in the ceiling grille traps interior dust before it reaches the evaporator coil. Wash monthly during active use, replace annually. A dirty filter reduces airflow, increases run time, and coats the evaporator with dust that only professional service can remove.

Reinstall shroud

Reset the shroud carefully — the drain hoses and any wiring should be in original positions. Torque shroud screws to snug, not overtightened.

Test with a capacitance meter or just replace with matching-spec unit ($15–30 part). Discharge the capacitor with an insulated screwdriver before touching terminals — even off-power, they hold charge.
